Arabs across the region have vented their anger at the atrocities carried out by ISIL in Syria and Iraq by starting a social media campaign inspired by the recent success of the ice bucket charity challenge.
ISIL has frequently used social media to spread its message of hate and now a group of Arab youths has launched a viral campaign where, instead of pouring a bucket of ice cold water on their heads, participants are invited to burn the black flag of ISIL and post a video or picture on social media, using the hashtag #BurnISISFlagChallenge.
As with the ice bucket challenge, participants are asked to nominate others to take part and it is hoped the campaign will have a similar viral effect and help raise awareness of their cause.
According to UK broadcaster ITV, the campaign has its origins in Lebanon, where flags were reportedly burned in response to the apparent beheading of a Lebanese solder by ISIL. The soldier was one of 19 soldiers missing since ISIL stormed a Lebanese border town last month.
